Chilkat Islands

South of the Chilkat Peninsula where Haines is perfectly tucked away between Mounts Ripinsky and Riley lay a chain of islands that extend for miles providing opportunities of paddling unspoiled Alaskan backcountry. Steep cliff bands that battle the winds that funnel through the fjord are paired with rocky beaches that invite any adventure-minded individual to set up camp and complete any combination of multi-day ventures that exist here. These islands fit very well with the theme of adventuring here in Alaska: never ending possibilities.

Had a great opportunity today to teach the Skagway rec center's Intro to Sea Kayaking class to a bunch of excited new boaters! I definitely find instructing these sports that I love super fulfilling and something I'm always going to do.

River day with the fellas! Now that we're in August, the first wave of guides leaving for the season is quickly approaching. The 'Yard' is going to be pretty dead without these guys around.

Alaska can only be crossed by a limited number of roads but the ones that do make you want to keep driving. Drove this road while dropping off a 24-day IWLS mountaineering crew yesterday. I'm excited to return shortly with a bike to take it deeper and higher into the mountains.

Didn't see a single bear today. Saw five! Running across the gravel flats on the Tsirku delta, the four cubs were chasing mom from one channel full of salmon to another.

Throughout this past week, the Chilkat watershed provided some of my most memorable experiences yet. Paddling alongside a humpback, watching porpoises chase a school of fish, floating through the eagle preserve, climbing Peak 3920 to see the whole valley. Haines continues to elevate my enjoyment of adventuring and of Alaska.
